How to make budgeting simple and master your money using The 50/30/20 Budgeting Rule

Managing your finances can feel very overwhelming. Whatever your age and stage of life, it can sometimes feel like an uphill battle to keep track of your money. I have spoken to so many women over the years who have never had the knowledge and tools to take control of their money confidently.

I spoke at an event last week; most of the audience were 30-45-year-old women. One woman commented that it had made her realise she needed to get her finances sorted. Someone else thanked me for making her more aware of where her financial future was headed.

My frameworks and advice give people actionable steps, and I wanted to share one of them today, which you might have heard of. If not, read on and use this if budgeting is an issue for you. One of the simplest yet most effective budgeting methods is the 50/30/20 rule, a clear framework used for many years to help you manage your income.

What Is the 50/30/20 rule?

The 50/30/20 rule is a straightforward budgeting method that helps allocate your income into three key categories:

🔹 50% – Needs (Essentials)

🔹 30% – Wants (Lifestyle Choices)

🔹 20% – Savings & Debt Repayment

If you start to follow this structure, you can create a balanced financial plan that meets your essential needs, allows for enjoyable spending, and secures your financial future.

Applying the rules

Let us start by breaking this down so you can see where you can make savings.

50%: Covering your essential bills/needs

This portion of your income goes toward non-negotiable expenses you must pay to maintain your daily life.

These might include:

✅ Mortgage or rent

✅ Utility bills (electricity, gas, water, phone, Wifi)

✅ Food and clothes ( but think essential rather than designer!)

✅ Insurance ( Life, house, car)

✅ Transport – car, train or buses.

✅ Loan or credit card repayments

If your essential expenses exceed 50% of your monthly income, you need to look closer to see where you can adjust your spending. Curently for so many people this is not always easy, given the cost of housing and utility bills. But you can look for ways to save money on food, bills, and transport. 30%: Your wants

This is where you can allocate funds for things that bring joy and improve your lifestyle. It includes:

💄 Shopping & beauty treatments

☕ Dining out & entertainment

✈️ Travel & leisure activities

📱 Subscription services

While this category is about enjoyment, She Can Prosper encourages mindful spending. Read this blog on ‘Are you buying a luxury or necessity’ to help you decide.

Ask yourself:

Do you need it?

If I spend this money, will it affect my long-term financial goals?

Let’s look at holidays as an example. They can run into costing thousands. Your holiday options should align with your longer-term financial plans. If having expensive holidays means the cost is added to credit cards, you need to rethink!

20%: Securing Your Future

The final portion of your budget is dedicated to financial growth and stability:

💰 Savings (Emergency fund, future investments)

💳 Extra debt repayments

📈 Retirement contributions ( read more on retirement planning here)

Building an emergency fund and reducing debt is crucial to long-term financial freedom. If you haven’t started saving, this is the perfect time to begin!
