Why Talking About Money Is So Important for Women

After more than 30 years working in financial services, you might think I’d have said everything there is to say about money.

But honestly, I haven’t. So I want to explain why talking about money is so important for women.

The conversations we really need, especially among women, are still surprisingly rare.

When I first started in this industry, I thought my role was just to give financial advice, and of course, that’s part of it. But over time, though, I realised something even more important when I worked with women. I saw the hesitation, mixed with a lack of confidence. This meant that decisions were being delayed and conversations were avoided. And often, the quiet belief that they were storing in their head along the lines of “I should probably know more about this… but I don’t.” It was sometimes embarrassment that stopped people from asking for help, but my view has always been that you only know what you know!

I’ve worked with hundreds of women: intelligent, capable, and successful individuals. Many are women running businesses or leading teams. Most are juggling households and finances.

And yet,I have heard these statements countless times –

This is not because they aren’t capable or lacking ability. It is in my view simply because they not been given the space to openly engage with money.

And to be honest, it hasn’t always been designed with women in mind. So women disengage, defer, and often decide it’s something they’ll “deal with later.” But later doesn’t always come.

She Can Prosper exists not just to share information, but to foster women’s financial confidence. I created it because women need confidence, mixed with a good community and a place for safe conversation without condemnation. The new Prosperity Club will be a space where they can talk openly about money. Learn in a space that feels human, not overwhelming and connect with other women who feel the same. Because when women come together and start talking honestly about money, something changes.

I’ve seen it happen so often that when a woman who felt unsure suddenly gains clarity, her confidence grows. It is great to see the transformation in someone who avoided making decisions and who is now beginning to take action. And that doesn’t just impact finances but can have a positive effect on business decisions, relationships, future planning and overall wellbeing. Because at the end of the day, money touches every part of our lives.

After 30 years, I’m still passionate about talking about money. If I am honest, I could retire tomorrow, but the strange thing is, I feel more driven than ever. Because I know how powerful these conversations can be, the difference they make and how many women are still missing out on them

What I am doing now isn’t about selling financial advice. My purpose is to create real change for women around money. It’s about helping women feel more in control, more confident, and more empowered in their financial lives.  You don’t need to have all the answers, but you do need to start having the conversations.

And that’s exactly what I’m here to do.
